Woods Hole scientists have been conducting winter surveys intermittently since the 1960s and annually since 1992.

The ocean-going research vessels Albatross IV and Delaware II spend more than 250 days at sea every year.

In this picture, the crew of the Albatross IV is getting ready to deploy a bottom trawl net.
