Abundance of dogfish
1950s

Fish stocks change regularly, and a species
that is abundant one year may be relatively scarce just a few years later.
In the 1950s, when fisheries technician Sam Nickerson posed with this
boatload of dogfish aboard the Albatross III, these small sharks were
considered trash fish and were thrown overboard by commercial fishermen.
In the 1990s fishermen looking for an alternative to depleted groundfish
began targetting dogfish, which they sold on the international market. |
