Trawling for groundfish
Circa 1953
Photographer: unknown
Fishermen began switching from hook-and-line
fishing to trawling in the early 1900s when steam-powered vessels became
available.
From the 1920s to the 1970s, side trawlers dominated the
New England groundfish fleet. Today most trawlers are stern trawlers.
In this picture taken by a biologist from the
Bureau of Commercial Fisheries (forerunner of NOAAs National Marine
Fisheries Service), the fishing vessel Wisconsin has a deck load of
haddock.
The biologist was probably aboard the Wisconsin to gather haddock
samples for stock assessment work.
