Aquarium Animals and Fishing

The aquarium collection includes cod and other cold water “groundfish” that have been mainstays of New Englanders’ diets for centuries.



Quahogs, a kind of clam that is eaten as littlenecks, cherrystones, and in chowder

 

Lobsters – the biggest Northeast harvest, in terms of dollars, with landings worth a quarter billion dollars annually

The aquarium collection includes many animals that are commercially important, such as:

 


New England groundfish -- cod, pollock, flounder, haddock, halibut



Atlantic salmon (ours are hatchery raised, non endangered salmon)



Striped bass, black sea bass, scup

 


Dogfish, once considered trash fish, now targeted and sold overseas for fish and chips
